Today’s One Shot comes from Andrea and Adam’s engagement session. Photographers are always searching for great composition all the while capturing that great moment. At least, that’s what we should be doing. Sometimes that comes fast and sometimes it takes a bit of playing around. I’ve been in love with this V shaped part of this light rail bridge over Tempe Town Lake for a while now. Initially, I thought it best to shoot up at them from hip level so as to get the most bridge in the picture as I could. It wasn’t until I stood on the small concrete wall in front of them that the composition came alive. It allowed me to get the water and the second V behind them, some of the bridge, and a really cool angle on this intimate moment. Having them place their hands on the wall instead of around each other was the icing on the cake. The lesson: sometimes the best composition isn’t always obvious. Try different perspectives, angles, and shooting heights.
Side note: Lately I’ve been adding a bit of a filmic grain to my photos. Something I always wanted a bit more of, but never found that sweet spot where I though they added to the photo and the feel of my editing without taking away from it.
Shot with a Canon 5D Mk III and a Canon 28mm 1.8 lens at ISO 640, f2.5, and 1/2000 of a second. Edited in Lightroom.
Aaron Kes (me!) is a Phoenix wedding photographer who also shoots weddings in Scottsdale, Tempe, the United States of America, and Earth. Seriously, I love to travel to shoot and do so often. Let’s have some fun!
